Lava Monsters are a rare and formidable species adapted to survive in the searing depths of volcanic worlds. Their bodies are living furnaces, sustained by a molten core that powers both their strength and vitality. Despite their fearsome appearance, they possess a structured culture and deep sense of honor that governs every aspect of their existence.
WEAKNESSES
Though immensely durable, Lava Monsters are not without vulnerabilities. Cold is their greatest threat. While their dense, insulated skin allows brief exposure to cooler climates, prolonged contact with low temperatures causes their internal magma to slow. Over time, this results in sluggish movement and physical stiffening. If not rescued, they eventually enter a comatose state, a deep sleep from which they cannot awaken without external heat.
A more fatal weakness lies in the core, a crystalline organ located in the chest where a Human heart would be. This core is both the life source and energy regulator of the Lava Monster. Damage or destruction of the core results in instant, irreversible death. Because of this, protecting it is considered sacred among their kind.
BEHAVIOR
Lava Monsters follow a distinct rhythm of activity and rest, spending approximately 120 hours awake followed by a 40-hour dormancy. Living deep beneath their planet’s surface, they lack a true day-night cycle and instead follow an internal sense of timing, making them cathemeral, active at irregular intervals throughout what others would consider day or night.
Their planet’s mineral-rich environment provides them with all necessary sustenance, eliminating the need to hunt. However, they still indulge in culinary preferences: meals that burn well are considered delicacies, and dishes featuring flammable ingredients are especially prized. Most eat twice daily, typically around 10:00 and again at 16:00, to maintain the energy required to fuel their internal heat.
Respect and honor are core to Lava Monster society. One of the gravest insults is the act of “puffing” blowing air through one’s mouth toward another individual, similar to "blowing a kiss" as Humans do. While harmless in appearance, it translates to the phrase “I long for the day you burn out,” a deep expression of contempt.
Their culture also emphasizes unity and loyalty. To demonstrate allegiance to their Emperor and homeland, many wear shades of red accented with golden metals, symbolizing shared strength and communal pride.
ANATOMY
The anatomy of a Lava Monster is a marvel of natural engineering. Beneath their thick, insulated outer skin flows a dense, molten substance, essentially living magma, that circulates like blood. This internal magma maintains their temperature and powers their physical capabilities.
At the core of their being, both literally and figuratively, lies a magma core, glowing with internal energy. This core sustains their metabolism and regulates their temperature.
Unlike most species, Lava Monsters do not digest food in the traditional sense. Instead, consumed matter is incinerated within their bodies, generating heat and maintaining the 800°C (1,472°F) minimum internal temperature necessary for survival. Their surface, however, remains at a comfortable 46°C (114.8°F), thanks to a multilayered insulating membrane that keeps their immense internal heat contained.
Overeating can temporarily amplify their strength and size due to excess energy storage, though this often leaves them fatigued once their internal systems stabilize. Their dense composition also makes them deceptively heavy, most adults exceed 100 kilograms (220 lbs) and contributes to their impressive durability.
LIFE CYCLE
All Monsters share a distinctive life cycle, and Lava Monsters are no exception. Gestation lasts approximately 1,000 days, after which the offspring are born in their juvenile Monster form, a smaller, fuzzier and more primal version of their adult selves.
Around the age of ten, they begin to shed these traits, gaining greater control over their bodies and the ability to shift between their Monster and humanoid forms. By twenty, a Lava Monster reaches full maturity, capable of shifting freely and harnessing the full potential of their molten physiology.
Mature Monsters experience a heat cycle, a biological phase marked by heightened temperature and energy levels. Despite the name, the heat cycle is not inherently aggressive or reproductive in a Human sense; it is a universal, temperature-based fertility window that occurs regardless of gender. During this time, body heat spikes, and a natural scent is produced, an instinctive signal to compatible partners. Interestingly, this scent can trigger a mutual response in mates, synchronizing both individuals’ cycles.
Each Lava Monster manages their cycle differently, as it's frequency and duration varies for every Monster, some prefer rest and seclusion, others socialization or indulgence in food. Regardless of how it’s experienced, it is considered a natural and essential aspect of their biological rhythm.
Ice Monsters are the frigid counterparts of their volcanic kin. Their physiology is built for endurance in subzero environments where most life cannot survive. Despite their imposing nature, Ice Monsters are not defined by savagery but by discipline, adaptability and the quiet resilience demanded by their frozen world.
WEAKNESSES
While their biology allows them to survive in extreme cold, Ice Monsters are highly vulnerable to extreme temperature. Prolonged exposure to molten or frozen climates rapidly destabilizes their internal structure.
Like all Monsters, Ice Monsters possess a core, a crystalline organ housed deep within the chest cavity. This core is the heart of their existence, regulating their internal temperature and maintaining their life force. Destruction of this core leads to immediate and irreversible death. For this reason, it is both sacred and fiercely protected.
BEHAVIOUR
Ice Monsters live according to the demands of their environment. Much like Lava Monsters, they follow a 120-hour active period followed by approximately 40 hours of dormancy, dictated not by a solar cycle but by their internal biological rhythm. Time, as other species perceive it, holds little meaning to them.
Unlike most Monster species, Ice Monsters are active hunters, a necessity born from scarcity. Their frozen planet offers little in the way of natural sustenance, so they rely on instinct, precision and strength to capture prey. Hunting is both survival and ritual, a communal act that reinforces cooperation within their groups.
They typically feed twice per day, around 06:00 and 18:00, though these times are fluid in practice. Meals are rarely prepared or cooked. Ice Monsters prefer to consume prey whole and raw, their dense internal cold preserving and slowly breaking down the material into energy. Their thick internal lining prevents injury from struggling prey and many claim that eating their catch alive provides a greater feeling of fullness, a notion both cultural and practical.
Socially, Ice Monsters value endurance, honesty and calm under pressure. Displays of unnecessary aggression or wastefulness are viewed as signs of weakness. They are known to express respect through silence rather than words and their loyalty is demonstrated not through gestures, but through shared endurance in the cold.
ANATOMY
The Ice Monster’s anatomy is a study in cryogenic adaptation. Beneath their frost-coated skin lies a semi-solid, gel-like substance infused with ice crystals that circulate energy throughout the body, the frozen equivalent of blood. This internal medium keeps their body temperature stable even when external conditions plummet far below freezing.
Their core, much like that of the Lava Monsters, is a central organ of pure energy. It regulates both metabolic activity and internal temperature, preventing their forms from freezing solid or collapsing into inert ice.
Ice Monsters do not digest food in the conventional sense. Instead, when they consume organic material, their bodies preserve and freeze it, gradually fracturing it into microscopic shards that are broken down and converted into pure energy. This slow conversion process allows them to survive for long periods on limited food supplies, a vital advantage in an ecosystem where resources are scarce.
Their dense tissue and layered insulation make them surprisingly heavy, though their movements remain fluid and silent.
LIFE CYCLE
All Monsters share a similar biological cycle, and Ice Monsters follow this same evolutionary pattern. Their gestation period lasts approximately 1,000 days, culminating in the birth of a juvenile Monster form, small and covered in soft fuzz. At this early stage, they resemble harmless snow-creatures more than the beings they will eventually become.
Around ten years of age, they begin shedding their juvenile features, developing the physical control necessary to transition between their Monster and humanoid forms. By twenty, they reach full maturity, capable of complete shapeshifting and temperature regulation.
Like all Monsters, Ice Monsters undergo a heat cycle, though in their case, the name is somewhat misleading. During this phase, their core temperature increases slightly. This marks a period of biological fertility and heightened energy output.
The cycle occurs regardless of gender and manifests differently among individuals. Some Ice Monsters become restless and active, taking to the cold plains to burn off excess energy, while others prefer hibernation and introspection. The scent released during this cycle can also trigger a corresponding response in their partner, synchronizing both individuals for successful reproduction.
Shadow Eclipsians embody mystery, endurance and quiet devastation. Their very essence is woven from shadow. Though feared for their connection to the dark, Shadows are far from mindless, they are survivors of a realm where silence often says more than words ever could.
WEAKNESSES
Despite their formidable resilience and mastery over darkness, Shadows possess vulnerabilities that keep them from being invincible. Their greatest weakness lies in the soul, the very core of their existence. Damage or destruction of the soul guarantees death, which is why Shadows instinctively guard their chest over their head, where their soul’s presence is strongest.
Another peril comes in the form of hemorrhage. A Shadow’s body contains a vital liquid essence that flows through their being like blood, losing too much of it can lead to fatal consequences. This substance is also referred to as "energy". Their adaption to darkness also renders them sensitive to intense light, a blinding weakness that sharpens their vulnerability to light-based attacks. Light magic is especially potent against them, capable of burning through their essence and disrupting the energy that sustains them. However, this adaption does allow them to see in the dark.
BEHAVIOR
Shadows lead lives marked by erratic rhythms and quiet endurance. They are active for roughly eighteen hours a day and require only two to four hours of sleep to recover their strength. Their cathemeral nature means they do not adhere to a fixed day or night schedule, they may work, wander, or rest at any hour, depending on their personal cycles and planetary alignment.
Their world provides abundant sustenance, allowing them to live without the need for hunting. Most Shadows eat once daily, often around midday, when their energy is at its lowest. This meal replenishes their strength for the rest of their waking hours.
ANATOMY
The Shadow form is a masterpiece of adaptive evolution, sleek, dark, and energy-efficient. Unlike Humans, Shadows do not produce waste. Every nutrient they consume is converted directly into energy, which fuels their physical and magical activities. Overeating temporarily disrupts this balance, causing sluggishness and weight gain, though the excess energy soon manifests as heightened reflexes and physical prowess before stabilizing again.
At the center of their being lies the soul, occupying the space where a Human heart would be. It is both their lifeforce and their identity, a vessel of memory, emotion, and energy. Destroying it erases them entirely, leaving behind no trace of their existence. The soul’s connection to their energy system makes it vital not only for survival but also for reproduction and magic.
LIFE CYCLE
The birth of a Shadow is a sacred event. All Eclipsians, whether born of light or shadow, share a similar reproductive process, one that symbolizes unity and balance. Regardless of gender, both parents contribute parts of their souls to form a new one. One becomes the carrier, nurturing the developing soul within their body, while the other takes the role of caretaker.
As the pregnancy progresses, the roles gradually reverse: the caretaker regains strength while the carrier’s soul becomes strained, requiring care and balance between both partners. The process lasts about eight months. Upon birth, the offspring emerge already capable of movement, small, agile and far less fragile than Human infants. They grow rapidly, reaching toddler-like development within weeks and full maturity around the age of twenty.
To the Shadows, this exchange of energy and care is seen as the truest expression of love, a literal merging of souls.
Light Eclipsians represent illumination, creation and divine vitality. Their souls shine like miniature stars and their presence alone can brighten the darkest of places. Though often viewed as the embodiment of purity, Lights are far more complex, beings of empathy, intellect and fierce pride, devoted to the balance their kind shares with the Shadows.
WEAKNESSES
Like their Shadow counterparts, the Lights’ existence revolves around the protection of their soul, a fragile, luminous core that governs their life and energy. Any harm to it is fatal, leaving nothing behind but fading light. While Shadows struggle under starlight, Lights falter in the dark, their eyes and senses are naturally attuned to illumination, making them disoriented or even powerless in pitch-black conditions.
BEHAVIOR
Light Eclipsians thrive beneath the stars and starlight, living by diurnal rhythms that keep them most active during the day. Like the Shadows, they require only two to four hours of sleep but tend to follow consistent cycles of rest and wakefulness.
They eat once or twice daily, most often near midday when their energy is lowest. Their culture places great importance on symbolism, especially regarding color. Wearing dark shades, particularly black or gray, is considered deeply disrespectful, as these hues are believed to represent the absence of light. To the Lights, brightness and reflection are sacred expressions of vitality and pride.
ANATOMY
While similar in structure to Shadows, Light Eclipsians are radiant and ethereal, their skin often emitting a faint glow under direct starlight. Their biology mirrors the same efficiency: food is fully transformed into energy, leaving no waste behind. Overconsumption results in temporary fatigue and sluggishness, which later turns into bursts of hyperactivity as their bodies process the excess energy. They may not posses a Monster or Shadow form but they are capable of summoning powerful beams of radiant light, capable of demolishing anything in their path. They can guide them to strike from above or sweep across the horizon with precision.
Their soul, residing in the chest, is the source of their luminosity and power. It functions much like a radiant core, storing life force and enabling both physical strength and magical potential. If destroyed, all energy within the body dissipates instantly, leaving only silence. Like Shadows, their souls play a central role in reproduction.
LIFE CYCLE
The Lights share an identical reproductive cycle with their shadow counterparts, based on harmony and exchange. One parent becomes the carrier, harboring the forming soul, while the other serves as caretaker, nurturing and sustaining them. This exchange of energy embodies balance, a constant ebb and flow of giving and receiving.
The process spans roughly eight months, after which the newborn emerges luminous and resilient, skipping the fragile newborn stage entirely. They mature quickly, achieving early development within days and reaching adulthood by twenty years of age.
Among the Lights, the birth of new life is celebrated as a divine union, the rekindling of celestial power.
